   That only applies to the Equip part of the card. The first ability says you can pay 2 swamp to attach it to a creature you control which can be used as an instant.

   He had 2 cavern’s. When the 2 Geralf’s Messengers were out, it was 2 black sources and a cavern, so by deduction, it was for zombies.
